Those wiggly creatures you find in the garden make you feel like, Yuck . But these creatures are helpful in the formation of compost. Many people are unaware of the benefits of worm composting. There are lots of campaigns carried out to create awareness among the people about worm composting.Worm composting is also known as vermicomposting. Because of the problem of Global warming, new techniques are always promoted to recycling and reusing of biodegradable matter. Worm composting is one of them.
Different types of worms that would be used for worm composting are tapeworms, tiger worms, and the wiggly worms. These worms have a large appetite for brown and green waste content. They eat in proportion to their body weight and produce more compost.
Worm composting can be done in apartments with the help of compost bins. They need a little space and do not litter the place.
They do not spread a decayed odor. For worm composting small sized containers are used, which are shallow. Many types of worm bins have built- in trays. It is preferred by many of them, because composting tends to complete in batches and each trays can be used again in starting a new session.
A lot of decayed waste which has worms is placed in the trays, grass, newspaper, vegetable peels, fruit skins, egg shells etc are put in . The newspaper is torn to pieces and then put in so that the worms can nibble easily. Green waste should be more than paper and other waste. Fertilizer produced by worm compost is rich in nitrogen content and can be used for growing organic vegetables. By strewing it around the garden lawn for it does not have a pungent odor.
Worms are capable to convert organic waste into rich humus. The soil benefits from the excreta of worms which contains nutrients required for all types of plants. Their castings also add ten times to the lost nutrients from the upper layer. Worms keep the soil soft and porous by moving around. This helps the plants to have a deep root system. And as the soil texture is good it can retain more water. So worms upgrade soil texture and soil structure.
Many people have started following composting in their home gardens,
Worm bin should also be taken care of by making sure that the moisture is thoroughly maintained. in the bins. Worms breathe through their skin and so they need to remain moist all the time. The worms crawl out and may die quickly, so keep the worm bed in the bin moist. The temperature of the worm bed should not go above 30C. There are micro organisms growing on waste materials and these wastes are eaten by the worms along with the micro organisms. So the manure produced by worms is rich with nitrogen. Worms love darkness. If kept in sunlight for long can kill them, so worm bins must be kept in low lit places.Worms are aerobic organisms, so make sure that they get proper oxygen supply, as they need dark places drill some holes under the bin.
Now more of compost bins and less of garbage bins will be seen.
